Once again, the year has flown by. Over the next three weeks, we will have many activities and some assessments as we finish the 2nd quarter and 1st semester.
I have noticed more students struggling with the phonics skills as the words get more challenging. To help, I have added a new block on the Homework Choice Board. Please be sure to work on this skill at home.
We will have our next Math Unit test on December 18th and 19th. A study guide will be sent home soon. This week, we will be working on Fact Families and missing numbers in equations (up to 20). Many times, this is a difficult concept for first graders. I have also added in practice and a picture example on the Homework Choice Board. Please check out the math page on the First Grade Blog for details. It should be updated by Monday afternoon.
In Social Studies, we are learning about goods and services. The first grade will have a Market Day on the 18th and 19th. We are making things to sell at school to sell to another class. During conferences, I had a conversation with a mom who volunteered to purchase clay for the project. Since then, I have forgotten who that was. (I should have written it down.) If you are that person and are still interested, please email me.
In writing, the students have noticed that many authors use real photographs in their informational books. For your child's next book, he or she will pick a topic and bring in printed pictures from home. Please keep in mind that some students are using small books (1/2 sheet of paper) and others are using larger books (full sheet of paper).Pease ask your child which book he or she has chosen. A note will be in your child's Thursday folder along with the topic of choice. If you do not have access to a printer, please let me know.
Cold weather recess:
For recess, the students are able to go outside if the "feels like" temperature is 32 degrees or higher. Please make sure your child dresses for the cold. Usually, we have our outside recess in the morning and our indoor recess after lunch. Now that colder weather is here, we may switch the indoor/outdoor recesses according to the "feels like" temperature. Of course, there may be days where we will not be able to go outside at all.
Upcoming Activities:
Chick-fil-a Night - Wednesday, December 13th, 5:00 - 8:00 pm - NPES Chorus performs
Dec 20th - Winter Break Class Party 12:30 - 2:00
Dec 21st - Polar Express Movie & hot chocolate in the afternoon (more info soon)
Hour of Code Dec. 14th and 15th
The Hour of Code is a way to show students what computer science is all about. It is full of activities that anybody can do. A variety of tutorials are available to teach the basics of computer science. The Hour of Code is sponsored by Code.org and aims to raise awareness and generate interest in the field of computer science.
